Forwarder loading timber in a pine forest at dusk

Mining & forestry

Slewing bearings, tool steel, torque tools and cast components for machines working in dust, damp and heavy load.

Industry needs

The mining environment is harsh in a predictable way. Dust and damp are constant, the loads are large and the machines run long shifts. What gives out is rarely the structure as a whole but the interfaces: the bearing that has to rotate with precision despite the dust, the tool surface that wears down, the bolted joint that has to hold its preload. The requirement is therefore not a high peak value but that the component behaves the same after a thousand hours as after ten, and that it can be inspected and replaced without taking the whole machine apart.

Machines in mining and forestry environments share the same underlying problem: they stand far from the workshop and they wear in a handful of places. That makes the choice of bearing, tool material and castings bear directly on how often the machine has to be taken out of service.

Tell us which machine and which wear you are dealing with, and we will look at where the limit can be moved.

Applications

Undercarriages in off-road machines

Forestry and off-road machines work where the undercarriage takes punishment all the time. Undercarriages from Titan Intertractor are intended for heavy vehicles and machines and give robust, durable support in demanding environments.

Slewing bearings in excavators and loaders

In the mining industry, slewing bearings are used in excavators, loaders and transport equipment among other machines. They have to handle large loads and demanding environments such as dust and damp, while the machine still has to rotate and slew with precision.

Tools and components that wear down

Tool steel is used in gears, machine parts and other components subjected daily to heavy mechanical wear and high loads. Where wear is what governs service life, powder metallurgical steel can be justified: the finer microstructure lets the material carry higher loads and last longer than conventionally produced steel.

Bolted joints in vibrating machinery

ITH's torque tools are developed for assembly in field work and in running production among other situations, which is exactly the case out at a machine. The tools can be preset to the torque required, and the tightening can be documented so the joint can be followed up at the next service.

Cast components in heavy machinery

ADI is used by manufacturers in the mining industry among others. The material is heat-treated ductile iron that exceeds steel castings in strength parameters and lets component weight be reduced by up to 20 per cent, while several welded parts can be replaced by a single casting.

Products for this industry

Aftermarket in this industry

Machines in a mining environment can rarely be sent away for service, which makes what is offered on site weigh heavily. Via thyssenkrupp Rothe Erde we offer inspection and service of existing slewing rings, with documented maintenance, access to spare parts and on-site support. ITH has training and certification programmes for those who operate and maintain the torque tools, and rental tools for temporary work. For wear-exposed surfaces, ceramic coatings can be an option, increasing service life 4 to 10 times in most corrosive environments.

Frequently asked questions

What is required of slewing bearings in a mining environment?

That they handle large loads and environments with dust and damp, while the machine still has to rotate and slew with precision. They are used in excavators, loaders and transport equipment among other machines.

When is powder metallurgical steel justified in wear-exposed components?

When the component needs hardness and toughness at the same time. Powder metallurgy gives a finer and more uniform microstructure than conventionally produced steel, which lets the material carry higher loads and last longer.

Can the tightening be documented out in the field?

Yes. ITH's torque tools can be preset to the torque required, and with Smart Tools pressure, preload and torque are recorded and evaluated in real time via the ITH Cloud.

Can wear-exposed surfaces be protected afterwards?

Ceramic coatings are applied by thermal spraying and increase service life 4 to 10 times in most corrosive environments, which makes them a way to extend the life of equipment already in operation.
