Glossary

Short, verified explanations of the terms that recur across our range.

Short explanations of the technical terms that recur across our range, from tightening torque to powder metallurgical steel.

Terminology in this industry is precise for a reason. A tightening torque is not the same thing as a torque rating, and a slewing bearing is not just any bearing. Choose the wrong word in an enquiry and you can get the wrong product back.

The explanations below are deliberately short. They should be enough to understand what is meant when the term appears on a product page or in a quotation, not to replace a data sheet.

If a term you meet in our texts is missing, tell us and we will add it.

ADI
Austempered Ductile Iron, heat-treated ductile iron. The TRIP effect lets the material outperform steel castings in strength parameters while retaining its toughness, and component weight can be reduced by up to 20 percent. Cast in weights up to 600 kg. Austempered Ductile Iron
Bolt tensioning cylinder
A hydraulic tool that pre-tensions a bolt by stretching it axially instead of turning the nut. The tensioning is friction-free and torsion-free, which distributes load more evenly across the joint. ITH calls the tool a Bolt Tensioning Cylinder. Bolt tensioner, Tensioning tool
Ceramic coating
A coating applied by thermal spraying that increases service life 4 to 10 times in most corrosive environments. It is used to extend the life of equipment already in service. Thermal spraying
Cold drawing
A forming method that gives an even, smooth surface and exact dimensions. It makes the profile suitable for precision-engineering applications and more detailed designs. Cold-drawn profile steel
Drop forging
Forging from forged bar to a fully finished part, in piece weights from 0.1 kg upwards. It also suits relatively small series where the part is to be delivered fully machined. Forging
Ductile iron
A cast iron that combines strength with toughness, used for parts under heavy load. Pegol supplies ductile iron in piece weights from 0.2 to 250 kg. Heat-treated ductile iron is known as ADI and reaches higher strength and wear resistance. Nodular cast iron
Electric arc furnace
An electric furnace in which steel is melted and its cleanliness controlled: sulphur, phosphorus and gases are removed, often with vacuum technology. The basis of cleanliness control for specialty steel. EAF
Extrusion
A forming method for unique and custom profiles with complex geometries, where conventional rolling is not efficient enough. Economical even in small batch sizes. Extruded profile steel
High-speed steel
An alloyed steel with high wear resistance and cutting capacity, intended for tools working under high frictional heat. The material does not soften until 600 °C, which lets lathe tools, drills and milling cutters run for long periods without wearing down. HSS
Hot rolling
A forming method in which the starting material is shaped between two counter-rotating rollers, in lengths of up to 70 metres. It gives strength and formability and suits large-scale projects. Hot-rolled profile steel
Powder metallurgical steel
Tool steel produced by powder metallurgy. The steel is first atomised into powder and then compacted, giving a finer and more uniform microstructure than conventionally produced steel. The result is a higher load capacity and a longer service life in demanding tools. PM steel, Powder steel
Preload
The force built into a bolted joint when it is tightened, and what decides whether the joint holds. It is reached by turning, with a torque tool, or friction-free and torsion-free by axial stretching with a bolt tensioning cylinder. Clamp force
Salt bath
A proven method for heat treating metals, for both heating and cooling. Salt combinations are available in the temperature range 150 to 1300 °C, matched to the process and the material. Salt bath technology
Slewing bearing
A bearing that lets a structure rotate and slew under high load. It is mounted directly against the mating surfaces and usually carries pre-drilled holes that make the fixing quick and stable. Used in wind turbines, cranes, construction machinery and mining equipment. Slewing ring, Slew ring
Super duplex
Stainless steel with very high corrosion resistance, for environments with seawater, crude oil, natural gas and chemical process media containing acids and bases. Used in oil, gas and the chemical industry among others. Super duplex steel
Technical ceramics
Custom-made mechanical parts and standard products in ceramic, with wear resistance, electrical insulation and complete tightness as the governing properties. Engineering ceramics
Tightening torque
The torque a bolted joint is to be tightened to. The value belongs to the joint, not to the tool. A bolt left too loose or pulled too tight makes the joint unreliable, which is why torque tools can be preset to the value required. Torque
Torque tool
A tool that tightens a joint to a preset torque, so the bolt is neither too loose nor too tight. Available in battery-powered, electric, pneumatic and manual versions. Torque wrench
Zero series
The first trial series of a new profile. The geometry goes into CAD, the zero series is manufactured for testing, and an approved zero series becomes the template for series production so the profile can be ordered identically again. Trial series
