The slewing ring on a tower crane, with the bolted joint between slewing platform and tower visible

Construction & contracting

Slewing bearings for cranes and construction machinery, torque tools for slewing rings, track plates and steel structures, and steel profiles for masts and structural steel.

Industry needs

A crane or an excavator works with heavy loads in motion, and the components that hold the machine together are checked out on site, not in a workshop. The slewing bearing has to let the upper structure slew and tip safely under load. The bolted joint that fastens the slewing ring to the undercarriage takes up very large forces and has to be pre-tensioned evenly. The track plates have to be checked regularly and stay fastened, or the machine stands still. In structural steel, the nodal points of the steel frame decide the rigidity and load-bearing capacity of the structure, and the pre-tensioning has to be documented to the current standard.

Most of what is on this page sits in the same machine. The slewing bearing that lets the crane slew, the bolt tensioning cylinder that pre-tensions the joint around it, and the steel profile in the mast above. That is why we would rather talk about the machine than about the products one by one.

This page grows with more applications during the autumn. Tell us which machine or structure it concerns and how it is loaded, and we will prepare a proposal together with Rothe Erde or ITH.

Applications

Slewing bearings in cranes and construction machinery

In cranes and construction machinery, slewing bearings let the machines slew and tip safely under heavy loads. Pegol supplies them from thyssenkrupp Rothe Erde, from standard bearings to specially designed bearings with large outer diameters.

The bolted joint between slewing ring and undercarriage

The slewing ring connects the crane's upper structure to the undercarriage and has to take up very large loads. ITH's bolt tensioning cylinders give an even and secure pre-tensioning of the joint, and the same tool family is used for the corner bar connections in the crane's steel structure and for the foundation bolts.

Track plates, hydraulic cylinders and structural steel

The bolted joints in construction machinery sit on track plates, slewing rings and hydraulic cylinders and are often exposed to extreme loads. ITH's tools tighten them quickly and securely on site. In steel structures for halls and bridges the nodal points are pre-tensioned in a controlled way and documented to the current standard, and the steel profiles for masts and structures come from Schwerter Profile.

Frequently asked questions

Which slewing bearings suit a crane or an excavator?

That depends on the load pattern, the speed and the mounting, not on the diameter alone. The range from thyssenkrupp Rothe Erde runs from standard bearings to specially designed slewing bearings with large outer diameters, and the sizing is done per application together with Rothe Erde.

How are the bolts in a crane's slewing ring pre-tensioned?

With bolt tensioning cylinders from ITH, which stretch the bolt axially without friction and without torsion. That gives an even pre-tensioning around the whole ring, which the joint between slewing tower and undercarriage requires since it takes up very large loads.

Can the tightening in structural steel be documented?

Yes. ITH's tools give controlled pre-tensioning and documented bolted joints to the current standards, for example the HV standard, and the nut runners keep the prescribed torque when steel beams are assembled.
